The 2004 Chambolle AC from Freddy Mugnier is a very lovely and complex example of the vintage. The bouquet shows just a faint whiff of its earlier pepperiness, but this element is very much subsumed in the lovely mélange of black cherries, dark berries, vinesmoke, incipient notes of forest floor, mustard seed and a touch of chocolate. On the palate the wine is deep, fullish and very tangy, with a lovely core of sweet dark fruit, modest tannins, fine acidity and excellent focus and complexity on the poised and quite long finish. - JG
