The 2008 Les Cras is really deep and sappy in this vintage and will make a really lovely bottle in about seven or eight years. The superb bouquet hops from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, smoke, complex minerality, bitter chocolate and a gentle topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and sappy at the core, with ripe tannins, bright acids and excellent focus and grip on the very long and refined finish.

Tasted out of barrel at the Domaine. This is a great wine from Christophe Roumier, which out of barrel appears to be a real step up from the Combottes. The Les Cras is adorned with an exuberant, complex bouquet with strawberry, Morello, raspberry, orange peel and a touch of white peach. Great definition and clarity. The palate exudes a sense of confidence and harmony, a sense of effortlessness that Burgundy can express more than any other wine. Seamless texture, utterly refined on the finish. Just a beautiful Chambolle. - WA
